Dates for 2017:

One-Week Clown Course, 15th – 21st May

Two-Week Clown Course, 4th- 17th September

We will start from zero, from the foundations of the Clown. We will rediscover our pleasure in playing, and we will reconnect with our innocence. From that place we will realise that, as we are not hiding anything, as we are innocent like children, we are loved by the audience. It´s then when our Clowns are born, when we consciously give ourselves the freedom to be who we are, perfect in our imperfection, beautiful in our naivety and clumsiness.

This course is is also a chance to further explore your clown. We will learn to share our pleasure with the audience, to relate to them through our eyes. We will simplify our thoughts and actions in order to bring humour more clearly to the audience. We will let ourselves go so that we will learn to swim comfortably in our craziness, in our absurdity, knowing when and how to get the best from it. We will work with emotions, understanding how the Clown relates in different ways to them, from play.

This course is aimed at those wanting to discover or explore further their clown. It includes a trip to the street to experiment with your clown, and at least one performance at an organised venue.

Introduction to Clown 10th to 15th October 2016

(arrival: the evening of 9th October)

Cost (classes and accommodation): 350€; Cost of meals: 90€

We will start from zero, from the foundations of the Clown. We will rediscover our pleasure in playing, and we will reconnect with our innocence. From that place we will realise that, as we are not hiding anything, as we are innocent like children, we are loved by the audience. It´s then when our Clowns are born, when we consciously give ourselves the freedom to be who we are, perfect in our imperfection, beautiful in our naivety and clumsiness.

We will work on the fundamentals of Clown:

Pleasure. The pleasure we have in play, in being alive. How to recognise it and maintain it, what happens when you lose it and what to do then.

The Flop. What it is exactly. What happens when the Flop comes and what to do then.

The trick to having certain success. How it works and why, if you do it well, it is impossible to fail in Clown.

Innocence. Redefining this concept, and becoming aware of why it is vital for the Clown, and which results we can achieve by being more innocent.

This course includes a trip to the street to experiment with your clown.

For those who do not intend to dedicate themselves professionally to Clown, this course constitutes a very enriching experience as well as serving to liberate prejudices and fears, leading to greater self-awareness and self-acceptance.

What makes us funny, which are the necessary elements to be a good clown and which is the secret formula of the clown to always have success.

We will explore the fundamentals of clowning: the pleasure of play, finding and accepting our failure; how to use our own ridiculousness in our favour. In other words, laugh at yourself and you will make others laugh! We will put on a red nose in order to remove our masks, to be re-born as clowns. We will admire each other for our stupidity and together will make fools of ourselves, enjoying the healthy craziness and innocence of the clown. We will work on the next concepts in practice: pleasure, flop, emptiness, the “not knowing”, the simplicity of the mental process of the Clown. We will explore, investigate and demonstrate what is it really that makes us funny, and what aspects we need to develop in our Clowns to make them work. We will understand the simple but effective formula to always have success as Clowns. A workshop aimed at those who want to discover or continue searching for their clown, for those who want to be freer, to accept themselves completely and to take full responsibility for their whole being, in order to be better Clowns. It could be a transforming and enlightening experience, and for sure a very fun and enriching time.

This is the course where we lay the foundations for the following courses, so we recommend you do this one, now or in the future, in order to understand fully how Clown works and to be able to build on that, up to creating your own numbers independently.

At Cal Clown we work on Clown in depth and rigorously, expecting from students commitment, passion and dedication, which is the only way, we believe, to achieve all the benefits of this profession/state of being, whether professionally or as a spiritual path. Making people laugh through Love is a serious business, in our opinion.

Clown Training

17th – 23rd October 2015

An opportunity to explore more in depth how the Clown works. How the Clown can feel much yet not suffer, how one becomes a mirror to human behaviour, via pleasure. How attachment/detachment works with emotions and the relationship to humour.

Directing Clown Numbers

24th – 29th August 2015

2nd - 7th November 2015

This course focuses on the ‘rules’ and forms of comedy and what makes it work. We will work both on new material created during previous courses or on already existing ideas, or from the student’s own repertoire. In each case the objective will be to find the best form for the number to have a maximum comic impact on the audience. Most importantly, we will look at how to combine this knowledge with your own personal clown, and how to create well-made clown numbers without losing your own spontaneous clown stupidity.

You will take home a wide range of creative possibilities.

Includes a public performance at the end of the course.

The Rules of Humour

dates to be announced

In order to be a good clown, it is necessary to understand how humour works and in this way be able to create it. What makes us laugh? And why? What kind of humour do we want to create as clowns, and how do we manage it? We will explore the laws of humour, and, above all, how to manage to do things incorrectly in order to make audiences laugh. A course aimed at lovers of humour and clown, or those who want to get the most out of their natural clumsiness in daily life.

How to Create Clown Numbers

17th – 22nd August 2015

26th – 31st October 2015

Do you want to explore how to generate varied material in order to create finished Clown numbers you can put on stage? In this course we will look at how to generate ideas and numbers, using: the abilities of the student (or the lack of ability); the Clown monologue; Clown emotions; and Clown characters. Each student should leave with material to be working on and, especially, with the knowledge of how to generate new material in the future.

This course is ideal for: those who have you begun to discover Clown and want to start making their own numbers; those who have been working on numbers for a while, but who would like to improve their creative capacity and be able to generate a larger amount of material and of a variety of styles; those who want to create their own clown material at a more professional level; and those who have yet to work with text, emotions or characters from the Clown state.

This course includes a performing a nearby venue.

Street Clowning

dates to be announced

What happens when you take a Clown out for a walk? How do people react? What can we do and how can we relate with the people that we encounter? Can we do it without talking? How can we create a number that is adequate for the street?

We will suggest some basic exercises to have an initial excuse to “be” on the street, later there will be room for improvisation. If there is time the group will do a show composed of individual numbers, or in couples or trios, but always respecting the level of clowning of the student and their will of taking risks.

This course is for anyone who wants to explore further their clown, and can be a continuation of the introductory course as well as good preparation for the courses on creating material.

This course includes a visit to perform for others in the context of social clowning.

Social Clowning

this course will take place within the Clown Training Course

What does a Clown do in a prison? How does a Clown move in a hospital? How can a Clown change social reality?

We will discover through play – individually, in pairs and in groups – how we can develop abilities such as confidence, listening and empathy which will help us to relate to, enjoy ourselves and play with a variety of groups in social difficulty. We will explore the ability of the Clown to adapt to any situation, and to respond in a positive and consistent way, allowing the Clown to become an agent for social change. We will learn about the characteristics of different groups and how to interact consciously with each.

We will devise short numbers to be performed. This is a practical course where we will make visits to perform in a prison, a hospital, a young persons’ residence and a retired people’s home.

No previous experience in Clown is required.

Clown and Silly Magic

Are you one of those Clowns who has no idea how to do a magic trick well but who would like to use a simple one in your numbers? Do you want to learn how to do absurd silly tricks, more appropriate for a Clown tan for a magician? If complicated magic isn’t your thing, or you are simply no good at it or don’t have the patience, in this course you can learn some simple and fun tricks to put in your numbers. Widen your repertoire with these easy tricks which Gary has spent many years collecting, and which can be adapted to street, indoor venues and a variety of audiences. In this course Gary will share many of his range of resources – magic tricks, clown gags, silly circus techniques, and more – as well as how to work with the audience and ways of developing these elements so as to convert them into numbers.

No experience required in either technique (Clown or magic).

A practical course in a magical setting with morning walks through the nearby woods.
