4th week

What Can Your Clown Do? - Directing Clown Numbers

Create your own solo numbers, as well as some together with other students. Perform numbers in venues outside of Cal Clown, on a minimum of 2 occasions during the course. You will receive constant guidance and direction for your work, and in order to be able to work in the future, you will have videos of your rehearsals and performances to take away and to continue working after the course.

We have spent the last 12 years providing training on a residential basis in the middle of nature (the first 18 months beginning in Barcelona). This intensive experience is not so common, since the majority of courses are short and in urban settings, or where students don’t live together. The residential course favours a rapid learning process and a greater assimilation, as well the possibility of working all day if so desired.

These courses also allow us to make frequent visits to various centres in the city of Figueres, from hospitals to mental health centres, prison or children’s homes.

We have been collaborating with these centres for 9 years and our presence is much appreciated and welcomed, to the extent that both citizens in Figueres miss the clowns on the streets during winter, and the patients in those centres count the days for the Clowns visits!

Maximum number of students: 16

All courses are residential and take place at Cal Clown; prices include accommodation throughout the course, and 5h daily class at least, 6 days per week..

This course offers a broad training ranging from the pleasure of play, of life, which is the driving force of Clown, to the creation of Clown numbers in the final performance. We will work through the various stages of the Clown process: openness, pleasure, humility, freedom, craziness, ridiculousness, imbalance, status, generosity, the flop, intelligence and types of intelligence or stupidity, sharing with and giving to the audience, the relationship with other clowns (solos/duos/trios/ensembles) and with the audience, admiration, sincerity, focus, surprise, energy, failure and success...

How to speak as Clown? How to dress as Clown? How to think as Clown? Ways of creating a Clown number: from improvisation to a script, with text or without, traditional or contemporary, with or without music, with or without props. What is the difference between performing for adults and children, in the street and in the theatre? How to work from your own personality and knowledge in order to create a number. The rules of humour. The Clown and other disciplines, or how to use your skills and/or lack of skills as a Clown.

This is a course that offers the possibility of understanding the Clown from the initial stages up to what is the aim of all clowns who wish to work independently: the creation of one’s own numbers, which will provide a basis for beginning and continuing to work professionally. Our objective is for the student to complete the course with their own criteria on what is Clown, having experienced a variety of contexts and teachers of differing styles, and feeling able to generate their own work and adapt it to a range of professional demands, whether in theatre, street, hospital, etc., and to different types of audience.

Two basic lines of work are followed, which will merge into each other:

Firstly, understanding what the Clown is, from where it comes and how to access it easily. This is normally relatively rapid, leading on to working on the other aspect:

The understanding of what humour is and how it works.

Both aspects will be worked on simultaneously, adding humour to heart, heart to humour, all from an in-depth understanding, allowing us to continue to be Good Clowns in the future, and to create original numbers.

Clara know how to guide students swiftly to connect with their Clown, as well as understanding how the Clown works. This enables the student to go out and experiment early on, and to learn correctly, since the guidelines will have been established clearly, allowing an understanding of why things do or do not work.

Some of the concepts worked on intensively at Cal Clown are:

Pleasure, innocence, emptiness, craziness, the heart, honesty, failure and success, offers, skills and ineptitudes, formulas of humour and incorrectness, contrast, rhythm and focus, and the message we want to transmit.

We will start from zero, from the foundations of the Clown. We will rediscover our pleasure in playing, and we will reconnect with our innocence. From that place we will realise that, as we are not hiding anything, as we are innocent like children, we are loved by the audience. It´s then when our Clowns are born, when we consciously give ourselves the freedom to be who we are, perfect in our imperfection, beautiful in our naivety and clumsiness.

We will work on the fundamentals of Clown:

Pleasure. The pleasure we have in play, in being alive. How to recognise it and maintain it, what happens when you lose it and what to do then.

The Flop. What it is exactly. What happens when the Flop comes and what to do then.

The trick to having certain success. How it works and why, if you do it well, it is impossible to fail in Clown.

Innocence. Redefining this concept, and becoming aware of why it is vital for the Clown, and which results we can achieve by being more innocent.

We will explore the fundamentals of clowning: the pleasure of play, finding and accepting our failure; how to use our own ridiculousness in our favour. In other words, laugh at yourself and you will make others laugh! We will put on a red nose in order to remove our masks, to be re-born as clowns. We will admire each other for our stupidity and together will make fools of ourselves, enjoying the healthy craziness and innocence of the clown. We will work on the next concepts in practice: pleasure, flop, emptiness, the “not knowing”, the simplicity of the mental process of the Clown. We will explore, investigate and demonstrate what is it really that makes us funny, and what aspects we need to develop in our Clowns to make them work. We will understand the simple but effective formula to always have success as Clowns.

This is an opportunity to explore more in depth how the Clown works. We will learn to share our pleasure with the audience, to relate to them through our eyes. We will simplify our thoughts and actions in order to bring humour more clearly to the audience. We will let ourselves go so that we will learn to swim comfortably in our craziness, in our absurdity, knowing when and how to get the best from it. We will work with emotions, understanding how the Clown relates in different ways to them, from play. How the Clown can feel much yet not suffer, how one becomes a mirror to human behaviour, via pleasure. How attachment/detachment works with emotions and the relationship to humour.

Do you want to explore how to generate varied material in order to create finished Clown numbers you can put on stage? In this course we will look at how to generate ideas and numbers, using: the abilities of the student (or the lack of ability); the Clown monologue; Clown emotions; and Clown characters. Each student should leave with material to be working on and, especially, with the knowledge of how to generate new material in the future.

This course focuses on the ‘rules’ and forms of comedy and what makes it work. We will work both on new material created during previous courses or on already existing ideas, or from the student’s own repertoire. In each case the objective will be to find the best form for the number to have a maximum comic impact on the audience. Most importantly, we will look at how to combine this knowledge with your own personal clown, and how to create well-made clown numbers without losing your own spontaneous clown stupidity.

You will take home a wide range of creative possibilities.
